My Kids WILL Like Billy Joel

17 Aug

I feel that I have accomplished many things as a parent in the past four and a half years. If I were to get trophies for each feat I think my son knowing all of the words to Piano Man by Billy Joel would be one of the bigger ones. Probably not as big as the potty training trophy, but certainly bigger than the trophy for not crying during Ariahna’s first haircut.

Growing up I feel that my parents definitely got a good grade on the parenting report card for the music they exposed us to. They blasted Springsteen and Billy Joel. That definitely beats the junk Tom had to listen to as a child. It made me sad that he didn’t know the lyrics to nearly every Billy Joel song like I proudly do.

While other young parents are making their children’s ears bleed by blasting Kesha and Lil Wayne (is he popular anymore?) my kids will be listening to the best of The Boss.

I had a rebellious stage around the age of 16 where all I listened to was really terrible rap. I knew it would make my parents cringe. Luckily they never lost faith in me. Maybe they knew I would climb out of the hole of “throwin hands” and “mean muggin” and would see my way back to the classics.

I am proud to say I have not the slightest idea what songs are on the top ten charts right now. I will obliviously blast “Tell Her About It” and pretend that people in the cars around me know all of the lyrics too. Call it my community service to the music industry.

And as for Kesha and Nicki Minage, they can crawl back into the drain pipes they came out of.

Later days blog world!

I remember you and your brother rockin to Neil Young in the back of my car. The driver behind us did not know if you were trying to dance or you two were just weird.
